Before deciding whether you will be using a multiplexer, or a quad, you should have in mind what is most important to you for your cctv system: Frame Rate, or Picture Clarity...?
A multiplexer operates by sharing "time" between the multiple cameras connected to it. It essentially places one frame of video for one camera, then another for the next security camera, and so on.. This allows the pictures recorded to maintain maximum resolution with only a loss in the overall frame rate per camera.
The Quad shares "space." With four surveillance cameras on the screen in the "quad" arrangement, you wind up with each cctv camera showing at half resolution both horizontally and vertically. The frame rate typically remains "real time" however, and the jittery movement usually associated with multiplexers is not present.
Either way, Both types of equipment allow us to maximize our security options with the use of less recording equipment.
